On 1 August the gate opens half an hour before sunrise, and by the end of the month it's only a few minutes before. The sun sets before the gates close all month, by about half an hour at the start and 20 minutes at the end. That means the last part of the day is in dusk and the drive back to Marloth Park is after dark. Drive slowly, as animals use the Marloth roads at night.

Holidays in August 2027

National Women's Day, 9 August, is a Monday in 2027, so Saturday 7 to Monday 9 August is a long weekend. There are no school holidays, with schools in term from 20 July to 22 September 2027.

Long weekends and school holidays are when the gates most often reach their daily limit for day visitors. If you're coming in from Marloth over the Women's Day weekend, be at the gate when it opens, and see quotas and pre-booking.

What August is like in the park

August is usually the driest month. Skukuza in Kruger averages a high of 28 °C and a low of 9 °C, with about 9 mm of rain. Mornings and evenings are cool. The bush is yellow and bare, which makes for good game viewing at the waterholes, and by the end of the month spring is on its way.

When to leave Marloth

Crocodile Bridge is about 20-30 min from Marloth Park, so a 05:30 start gets you to the gate when it opens at 06:00.

Lower Sabie is 34 km from the gate, a little over an hour at the 30 km/h average to plan on. Leave Lower Sabie by 16:45 to be through Crocodile Bridge before 18:00.

The day fee is R140 for a South African adult until 31 October 2027; Kruger fees has the rest.

Other months: July, September or the whole year.
